I must say that I have trained my daughter well! Recently, Ashlyn was at the Goodwill on Woodruff Rd. in Greenville, SC. She came across a lamp that she thought I'd like. She Facetimed me to see if I wanted it. I knew it would be perfect for the twin guest bedroom that I was planning in my head. The kicker was that there was no price tag.

We all know that Goodwill has drastically increased prices with the boom in recent years towards thrifting and upcycling. She said she'd check and try to work some magic. This girl will haggle with no fear.

According to her, this store has a great designer clothing boutique. She went to the register with a designer sweater and blazer. The girl priced the lamp at $4. She didn't even ask me; she just bought it.

The Lamp

I appreciate that the lamp is not stark white. It is more of a cream color.

It's a great oversized base.

It will be the perfect size in the middle of 2 twin beds.

I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it before I even had it in my hands.

This would be a simple makeover with Rub n' Buff and a new shade.

Simple fits into my vocabulary these days.

The lampshade was severely dented and crumbling with age. I love the overall shape and size of the lamp. The brass finish just felt a bit thin and cheap-looking to me.

Hunting for Lamps

  • Thrift Stores
  • Estate Sales
  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Consignment Shops
  • Vintage Shops
  • Etsy (search 80's glass ginger jar lamps)
  • Ebay
  • Family
  • Your home!

TIP: I measured the old shade on the lamp as a guide to the one I purchased online. If there is no shade, you can always borrow one from another lamp in your home to get an idea.

How-To

This is one of those quick and easy projects with big results!

Clean your lamp with a soft damp cloth like microfiber.

If you are concerned about getting the antique gold Rub ‘n Buff on the white of the lamp, use painter's tape

Using Rub ‘n Buff in antique gold, apply it with a brush to the brass areas. You can also smooth it out with a soft cloth.

In most cases, a second coat is not necessary. It does not take much time to dry. I applied several coats while drying between coats. I applied it to the base rather haphazardly going for a thicker, layered effect. Once it is dry, use a soft, clean cloth to buff the aged look to a beautiful luster.

I opted to apply the antique gold color to the antique brass finial for a cohesive look.

It only takes a small amount to cover your project. You can apply with a small brush for more detailed work or use a soft rag.

Wear a glove to protect your hand. I use brushes and rags that I can just throw away. If not, you will need to use mineral spirits to clean.

Styling the Lamp

For now, I am using the lamp in our family room for an updated look for this vignette.

TIP: I like to use KASA smart bulbs that I set up with an app on my phone. They also work with Alexa. I use the same brand of smart bulbs, plugs, and outdoor plugs. I have things set up on timers which we love. I can also say things like….Alexa, turn on the outside patio lights. It's fantastic!

I eventually will use the lamp in the twin guest bedroom that is in the works.

We just received these twin beds this week and put them together yesterday. We LOVE them!

I do realize that this pleated shade is an investment. In light of how expensive these lamp bases can be when purchased new + a shade, I'm ok since it was a $4 lamp!

I adore the pleated shade look with patterned fabric. It is so classic and a great way to add patterns. I do plan to try my hand at making my pleated shades for another upcoming thrfted lamp so this shade will be an excellent guide to go by. Stay tuned for that!
