Saturdays on the Porch

fall porch decor

Happy Saturday! August has sure flown by! I hope to finish up the last bit of my fall decorating this weekend.

Ashlyn and Tim returned from their trip to Ireland last night and picked up Sully. We sure enjoyed having him. He and our cat, Jack, get along well. Luckily they have been around each other since Sully was picked up in the middle of the road at 3 weeks old. He just turned two.

Our foyer has looked like a cat romper room for the last 10 days. Unless he is eating or using the litter box in our bathroom, he likes to hang out in the foyer. I think with his limited eyesight, he feels comfortable in the open space to play. He can lounge next door in a dining room chair.

Speaking of Ashlyn's trip, she wore these waterproof sneakers every day while in Ireland. Her husband has the matching ones. Their feet were dry and comfy. Vessi has a sale this weekend so I got the same ones in black for an upcoming trip.  I like plenty of toe box room and they say there are great there. I'll let you know.

I also needed a warm, waterproof coat for our trip in November. Eddie Bauer has a sale as well so I got this black coat in medium. I got an extra $20 off for signing up for email and text notifications.

The Look

I wore this out to dinner one night. We took my mom to Outback. It was a nice evening. The white board on the stairs behind me is a piece of foam board from Hobby Lobby. We use it to block Sully from going upstairs. He has limited sight and want to keep him off the above balcony area.

I got my top on clearance at World Market recently. I do not see it on their site, but linked something similar.

What a fun 10 days we've had with Sully!

Our westie, Bently, also uses these cat towers. They are smaller in scale and perfect in a bedroom. They love to look out the window into the backyard.

What I'm Reading

I love to read AND listen to books. If you are looking for a way to get more steps in with your walking…..listen to books! You will want to keep walking to listen. I also listen while doing chores around the house. I will use my earbuds while walking, While in the house I will use a Bluetooth speaker that I can carry around with me or our Alexa.

I read actual printed books as well as on Kindle. I prefer my Kindle, but holding a real book occasionally is nice.

I've had my Audible membership for a while, and LOVE it! It gives me one book credit per month.

Let me share how I read on Kindle and listen to books. Get yourself a library card!

Then add the LIBBY and HOOPLA apps to your phone.

Also on OSH!  Saturdays on the Porch #15

I will typically check to see if a book is available there first before using my credit or buying. Using these 2 apps with your library card is FREE!!! I love FREE.

There may be a waitlist if it is a newer title or popular. That's ok. Sometimes the wait can be lengthy. If I'm not willing to wait, I will just purchase. If it is new or popular, you NEED to finish the book in the allowed checkout time. Sometimes you can renew, and sometimes you may have to get back in the queue. If that happens, when it is available again…..it will download where you left off.

Get in the habit of always carrying a book with you to get in a little extra time. That way if you are waiting at the doctor's office or to get your car serviced….you are prepared!

It was my goal to read more than 12 books last year, and I completed that task. Check out that list which has been updated with my thoughts on the books. Here is my list for 2024. This is the list of definites for the year. I have a goal of 36 books this year. I will sprinkle in lots of audiobooks as well. Here is an update for 2024.

  • Still Life is book 1 of a cozy mystery series.
  • Sandwich is a family saga about a yearly summer trip to Cape Cod. I didn't love it, but enjoyed it. Just read the description on Amazon. It does have a subject that might be triggering to some and borders a bit on modern-day current hot topic.
  • Margo's Goot Money Troubles is one that was recommended in a Facebook reading group. This is one that I read based on the cover and didn't read much about beforehand. It was interesting and an enjoyable read. It centers on the story of a young single mother resorting to Only Fans to make ends meet. Warning….rated R content with language.
  • I am currently reading The Third Girl. This series is about a recently divorced woman who leaves the US to start a new life in France. It had me at France! (mystery series)

We have been doing Hungry Root here and there for busy weeks. We really enjoy these meals and they are so easy. This would be a simple recipe to replicate and plan to do so!
